MOTIVATION AND MENTORING WORKSHOP
By Dr. OTHMAN MUJAHID
17th March 2019
If You Refuse to
Drink from the Fountain of Knowledge, you will Die from the Thirst of Ignorance
That was the opening statement from Dr. Othman Mujahid in a Mentorship
Workshop for ALIM High School students on Sunday 17th March 2018.
Dr. Mujahid is a well-known Educationist and a powerful Motivational Speaker
in the country. Alhamdu Lillah! He has involved himself in Youth Mentorship
programs in many schools and institutions. Dr. Mujahid is a graduate of McGraw
University with a PhD in Educational Management.
The Management had invited Dr. Mujahid to “Motivate and Mentor” the
Students of Alim High School. Accompanying Dr. Mujahid was Sh. Khalfan
Abdallah, the Gulf Africa Bank Foundation Sharia Compliant Manager, a Scholar in
his own right and Mentor.
Sh. Khalfan opened the one day workshop by carrying out a needs
assessment. The students were each asked to identify three top life priorities
that they would hold dearly until the end of their lives. Masha’Allah! It
became a very interactive session where students enumerated different life
priorities. Finally Sh. Khalfan summarized them into three – knowing and
understanding the Quran and Sunnah; Ikhlas – that whatever you do in life, you
should do it to please Allah; and seeking knowledge – seeking beneficial
knowledge. It is those three top life priorities that can shape their
lives. He concluded his session by advising
the students that in whatever situation they are in, they should always find
time to read the Qur’an. He quoted Verse 73:20 of Surat Muzzammil where
Allah repeats in the same verse the command, “Read, therefore, of the Qur’an
as much as may be easy for you.”

Dr. Mujahid captivated and engaged the students throughout his session,
taking them through the Ten Formulas of Life. He gave meaning to the
four letters of the word LIFE. Explaining that: L stands for Learning –
that knowledge is power, but, Learning is super-power; I is for Intelligence
that is Inspired by Allah; F is for Faith – that nothing is done
and done very well without Faith; E is for Encourage – that you Encourage
yourself that whatever good you are doing, you are doing it very well.
Among the ten formulae are:
I + A = D which translates to - Intention and Action
leads you to your Destination. He gave a parable to it by stating:
you know the reason why, and the why can make you cry;
will always fly even if you don’t have the wings to fly
will go so high no matter the circumstances, even if you have to die
the end of the day you will fly and reach the sky
you know the reason why.
B + B = L translating to - Belief and Becoming
(not being) gives you the License to Live. He urged the students
to always think with a Winner Mentality, because they were winners even before they
were born. When the seeds of life (Nutfah) were released by the father,
millions of them were racing towards the only egg from the mother’s fallopian
tube. The winning seed fertilized the ovum. You are therefore a product of the
winning seed. If you won during conception, then with a winner mentality, you
will always win.
Dr. Mujahid advised that the only way to succeed in
the future is for you to create that future. That if you do not have the BALANCE
of MIND and HEART, you become DISTRUCTIVE. The students were encouraged not to
go for what is easy and comfortable but for what is hard and necessary. That
the right Attitude and Aptitude will lead them to their highest Altitude.
He gave the tenth formula as, Prior-preparation prevents one from poor performance.
Finally, Dr. Mujahid asked the students to write the
poem of an eighteen year old who had realized that his wayward activities were
leading him astray. Dr. Mujahid dictated the 10 stanza poem in the language of
Najua najitambua, Maovu nitararua
Mazuri nitachukua, Mimi ni mtu wa murua
Hata likin’gara jua, Lazima mwisho kutanyesha mvua
Najali maisha yangu, Najua umuhimu wangu
Namuogopa Mola wangu, Sipendi maisha yawe uchungu
Kufaulu ni jukumu langu, Silaumu ulimwengu.
Mimi ni M-boy fiti, Na tena niko Smarti
Sitaki ya ati-ati, Nikashangaza ummati
Maisha yangu sipendi yawe tight
I will always do what is right.
With active participation, the students loved every
moment of Dr. Mujahid’s presentation. He finally split the students into ten
groups. He gave them time to deliberate as a group and come up with ten things
they had learnt throughout the day’s workshop. Then each group representative
will come forward and read out his group’s report. It was the most fascinating
experience for the students.
In their presentations, the students made a commitment
to respect their teachers, respect the Management, respect their parents,
respect each other and above all respect their studies. They repeated the ten
stanza poems and the tenth formula of life, that Prior-preparation prevents
one from poor performance.
They promised to be smart thinkers and smarter
students. May Allah fortify their resolve – Ameen.
